History and Theory of Gestalt Play Therapy

Play therapy has a rich history spanning a wide range of theories and models. In this workshop, attendees review the history of play therapy, including the emergence of play therapy seminal theories, with an emphasis on Gestalt Play Therapy, developed by Violet Oaklander. Gestalt Play therapy is an approach to play therapy that is humanistic, process-oriented, experiential, and relationship-based.  Attendees will identify how Gestalt Play Therapy aligns with the therapeutic powers of play and gain foundational knowledge of this dynamic theory.

Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the history of play therapy and identify seminal play therapy theories, including Gestalt Play Therapy
  2. Describe how the Therapeutic Powers of Play align with Gestalt Play Therapy
  3. Name at least five key theoretical aspects of Gestalt Play Therapy
