Basic Principles of Drama Therapy for Play Therapists

There is an overlap between the expressive therapies of play and drama. Very often, play therapists are utilizing dramatic play such as role-playing, pretend play, and physical play with children. This workshop will provide a framework for understanding the basic underpinnings of drama therapy, especially as it relates to (and informs) play therapy. The presenters will provide a number of ideas for engaging families in dramatic play that includes mirroring, movement, and creative imagination, and you will be encouraged to try out these activities in order to deepen their potential for therapeutic use. A brief didactic presentation will inform you about the long tradition and history of drama therapy and applications with different populations and problems. This workshop is highly experiential and active.

Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. List three principles of drama therapy which resonates with play therapy;
  2. Define the term drama therapy and pinpoint the most relevant foundational principle;
  3. List three drama therapy techniques that can be used with children and families.
