Bibliotherapy: A Play-Based Approach

The use of books in therapy has been gaining popularity over the years, particularly when working with children. The use of books in play therapy allows for clients to engage in discussions and activities that can clarify experiences, validate feelings, and explore coping skills. Using books in play therapy sessions allows clinicians to adapt to a child’s particular needs, age, and history. This workshop will explore the use of bibliotherapy in the play therapy room.  Specific topics of interest will be explored and book-related activities will be presented. Explore the wonderful world of books for working with children in the play room.

Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the use and purpose of bibliotherapy in the play room
  2. Compile a list of books for bibliotherapy use in the play room
  3. Identify play therapy books related to trauma, self-esteem, foster care, and several others
  4. Demonstrate at least one play therapy technique for each book explored
