Mentalization, Attachment and Psychodynamic Play Therapy

In psychodynamic play therapy, the therapists countertransference experiences are an important source of information about the childs psychodynamics. The theoretical basis of this training is a psychodynamic play therapy viewpoint that incorporates attachment theory and the concept of mentalization from a theoretical and technical perspective. This virtual workshop will allow participants to explore how attachment security in primary attachment relationships and in the relationship with the play therapist relate to the development of mentalization. Join us for a careful exploration with Dr Ayelet Barkai, Child, Adolescent ,and Adult Psychiatrist and Adult Psychoanalyst, Lecturer in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

    1. apply the concept of mentalization in a psychodynamic play therapy mode of treatment.
    2. define three non-mentalizing modes that occur in the context of play therapy.
    3. describe how attachment security in primary attachment relationships and in the relationships with the play therapist relates to the development of mentalization.
