Augmenting Play Therapy Practice with Digital Tools and Emerging Technologies
This engaging and forward-thinking presentation dives into the dynamic world of play therapy enhanced by cutting-edge digital tools. We will explore the utilization of online mediums, including gaming, virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) to expand the horizons of play therapy treatment. Participants will learn how to harness the potential of these digital innovations to foster therapeutic relationships with digital native clients, educate and empower caregivers, and decipher symbolic and thematic material in the digital age. This session combines theoretical knowledge with practical insights to equip play therapists with the skills needed to creatively and competently integrate digital therapeutic tools effectively into their play therapy practice.
Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the evolving landscape of play therapy in the digital era, identifying key interventions within online mediums, gaming, VR, and AI.
- Apply strategies for educating and supporting caregivers in using digital therapeutic tools to enhance their child's emotional well-being, fostering collaboration between therapists and caregivers.
- Identify thematic material and conceptualize symbolic play within innovative play therapy interventions.

About our presenter: Dr. Rachel Altvater (Psy.D., RPT-S™) is a multi-award winning, pioneering expert, leader, researcher, international trainer, author, and supervisor in the field of play therapy. She is a licensed psychologist and holds national certifications as a Registered Play Therapist–Supervisor™ and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She is the owner of Creative Psychological Health Services, past president of the Maryland/DC Association for Play Therapy, editorial advisory board member for the International Journal of Play Therapy®, clinical advisory board member for PlaySpace, and clinical consultant for Hopscotch. Dr. Altvater authored the book Perspective: Contemplating the Complexities of Our Realities, published her research in the International Journal of Play Therapy on technology use in play therapy, and is a contributing author in numerous scholarly texts on implementing digital technologies in play therapy practice.
